Filler Pre/Post Instructions
Pre-Treatment Instructions
- Please arrive for your appointment with a clean face and without makeup.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking 24 hours prior to treatment.
- To minimize the risk of bruising or bleeding at injection sites, avoid taking unnecessary blood-thinning medications, supplements, or herbs, if possible. These may include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and other herbal supplements. For patients taking daily over-the-counter or prescription blood-thinners or blood-thinning medications under the guidance of a health care professional, please continue these medications.
- No dental work 2 weeks prior to treatment, even if your dental work is as simple as a routine cleaning. This may result in your procedure being rescheduled.
- No vaccines or medical procedures 2 weeks prior to treatment. This may result in your procedure being rescheduled.
- Report any current or recent illnesses to your provider, as these may prevent you from having your treatment on your scheduled treatment day.
- Avoid any procedures that disrupt the skin barrier for at least 2 weeks prior to filler treatment, including chemical peels, microneedling, and certain laser treatments. Please allow 4 weeks after CO2 laser treatment.
- If you have a history of herpes simplex virus (cold sores) in any treatment areas, notify your provider, as pre-treatment with an anti-viral medication will be required. Your provider will give you specific instructions.
- Notify your provider if you have any severe allergies.
- Notify your provider if you have had an adverse event with previous injectable treatments.
Post-Treatment Instructions
- Cool compresses or ice packs can be used for 15 minutes once per hour to reduce swelling.
- Refrain from manipulating/massaging the treated areas for 48-hours post-treatment, unless instructed by your provider.
- Refrain from makeup for 48 hours (about 2 days). Gentle cleanser, gentle moisturizer, and mineral sunscreen are recommended.
- Avoid excessive heat and sun exposure for 72 hours (about 3 days) post-treatment as heat can promote bruising and swelling.
- Refrain from exercise for 72 hours (about 3 days) post-treatment.
- Tylenol may be used to manage discomfort. If possible, refrain from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
- Consider sleeping with your head slightly elevated and on your back if you want to decrease swelling in the treatment area.
- Avoid facials, microdermabrasion, microneedling, laser and light-based treatments for 4 weeks after filler treatment. The effects of these treatments on filler are unknown. Contact your provider if you are unsure about a particular service within this 4-week timeframe.
- If you develop any symptoms of concern, including pain, significant swelling, excessive bruising or skin discoloration following your filler treatment, please reach out to your provider immediately.
