What is Kybella?

Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, a molecule naturally present in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the submental fat, also known as “double chin,” Kybella triggers the destruction of fat cells, rendering them incapable of storing or accumulating fat. This FDA-approved treatment offers a targeted approach to reducing submental fullness and reshaping the chin contour.

How it works.

Kybella contains a non-human, non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected under the chin, the deoxycholic acid breaks down the unwanted fat. Once those fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer continue to accumulate or store fat.

  • How does Kybella work?

    Kybella’s active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat cells once injected into the submental area, thus gradually reducing the fullness under the chin.

  • Who is an ideal candidate for Kybella?

    Individuals with moderate to severe submental fullness who prefer a non-surgical treatment option are ideal candidates for Kybella. A complimentary consultation with one of our skilled clinicians can confirm your eligibility.

  • How many treatments will I need?

    The number of treatments varies among individuals. Typically, visible results are achieved in two to four treatment sessions spaced about a month apart.

  • Is there downtime after a Kybella treatment?

    While there’s no extensive downtime, swelling, bruising, or numbness in the treated area may occur, which typically subsides within a week or two.

  • What makes Kybella different from other fat reduction procedures?

    Unlike surgical procedures, Kybella offers a non-invasive solution to reduce submental fullness with injections, making the treatment quicker with less downtime.

Things to Keep In Mind for Treatment

  1. Do not use the following products 2 days prior or 2 days after your treatment (or until pinkness has subsided): RetinA, retinoids, or similar vitamin A compounds, harsh scrubs or exfoliating products, or bleaching creams (unless instructed otherwise by your provider).
  2. Do not apply any creams, lotions, perfume or makeup etc. to the treatment areas prior a to be treated, prior to treatment.
  3. Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications 10-14 days prior and 3-4 days post treatment. Medications such as: Aspirin, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil Supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
  4. Do not consume alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising).
  5. Consider taking Arnica tablets beginning 1 week prior to injections to prevent bruising.

  1. Avoid extreme temperatures of heat for 24 hours post treatment (i.e. Jacuzzi, hot showers etc.).
  2. Do not consume alcohol or sodium for 3 days post treatment to avoid excess swelling.
  3. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post treatment.
  4. Sleep on your back with your head elevated to decrease swelling.
