Sculptra Pre/Post Instructions
Pre-Treatment Instructions
- Come to your appointment without makeup on the area to be treated, as this helps reduce the risk of infection and allows the practitioner to work on a clean surface.
- No dental work 2 weeks prior to treatment, even if your dental work is as simple as a routine cleaning. This may result in your procedure being rescheduled.
- No vaccines or medical procedures 2 weeks prior to treatment. This may result in your procedure being rescheduled.
- Report any illness to your provider as this may prevent you from having your treatment on your scheduled treatment day.
- If you have a history of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in any treatment areas, notify your provider, as pre-treatment with an anti-viral medication will be required. Your provider will give specific instructions.
- You should avoid the following supplements 7 days prior to your treatment:
- Aspirin, fish oil, cayenne, feverfew, garlic, NSAIDs, gingko, ginseng, kava-kava, all herbs, guarana, tumeric, meadowsweet, niacin, vitamin E, vervain, wheat germ, white willow, St. John’s wart
- To minimize bruising, consider the following options. Please note these steps are optional and at your discretion:
- Arnica capsules
- Bromelain tablets
- Fresh pineapple and papaya
- Notify your provider if you have any severe allergies
- Notify your provider if you have had an adverse event with previous injectable treatments
Post-Treatment Instructions
- Massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days following your treatment. Massage allows the Sculptra particles to develop collagen evenly under your skin.
- A few days post-treatment you will look the same as you did before the treatment. This is because the water that was injected will be absorbed, leaving the Sculptra particles behind to stimulate your own collagen to grow.
- Results appear gradually over a few months and will last 2 or more years.

- Refrain from exercise for 72 hours (about 3 days) post-treatment.
- Avoid excessive heat and sun exposure for 72 hours (about 3 days) post-treatment as heat can promote bruising and swelling.
- Tylenol may be used to manage discomfort. It is common to have bruising, tenderness, and swelling post-treatment. You may apply Arnica as directed by your provider.
- Consider sleeping with your head slightly elevated and on your back if you want to decrease swelling in the treatment area.
- Ensure the treatment area remains clean for the first 48 hours (about 2 days). For example, sanitize your phone with alcohol or use speaker phone whenever possible, use clean towels, etc.
- Do not receive facial, laser, or microdermabrasion treatments for 4 weeks post-treatment. Contact your provider if you are unsure about a particular service within the 4-week timeframe.
- Do not schedule a cosmetic procedure that breaks the skin barrier for 6-8 weeks.
- Refrain from dental work or medical procedures for 2 weeks post-treatment.
