Things to Keep In Mind for Treatment

  1. For one month prior to treatment, avoid sun exposure, as well as tanning beds and tanning creams. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunblock SPF 50 or greater when treatment area is exposed to the sun. If you are tanned, you may not be treated.
  2. On the day of treatment, it is important that you clean the area to be treated.
  3. Male patients that are having their faces and neck treated, you should be clean shaven before the procedure.
  4. Begin Hydroquinone as directed at least 2 weeks prior to the treatment date, and discontinue use 2 days prior.
  5. Discontinue Retin-A 2 weeks prior to treatment.

  1. Use cold compresses every two hours for 20 minutes to help control swelling and discomfort.
  2. Cover treated areas with Aquaphor every two hours.
  3. Keep your head elevated by using two or more pillows when lying down.
  4. You may experience mild/moderate pinpoint bleeding, swelling, edema/erythema.
  5. You may feel nauseated or like you have a fever. Your body is responding to the treatment and trying to heal.

  • What should I expect during a SmartSkin CO2 laser treatment?

    A topical anesthetic is generally applied before the procedure, so most patients report feeling a little pain and discomfort during the treatment itself. Some patients do report feeling heat and tingling sensation as the laser scanner moves across the face. The entire face can be treated in less than 30 minutes.

  • What’s recovery like?

    Since the SmartSkin CO2 laser delivers micro pulses of energy, you will experience a significantly shorter recovery time than you would with fully ablative lasers. You can expect anywhere from 3-10 days of downtime depending on the intensity of the treatment. Most common downtime is 4-5 days with red and swollen skin.

  • How many SmartSkin CO2 laser treatments will I need?

    You will see results after just one treatment. However, since treatments can be adjusted to your cosmetic and downtime expectations, you can opt for two or three fewer intense sessions. During your consultation, your provider will personalize the treatment plan based on your skin type, concerns, and how your skin responds to the first session. Typically, treatments are spaced 1 to 3 months apart to allow for healing and collagen regeneration.

  • How soon will I see results?

    Visible improvements can typically be seen after just one treatment, with skin continuing to improve over the next few months as collagen builds. The best results are often seen after a series of treatments.

  • How long do results last?

    Results from SmartSkin CO2 Laser are long-lasting, especially when combined with a good skincare routine and sun protection. Depending on your skin type and aging process, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 1-2 years.
