What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin-rejuvenating treatment that promotes collagen and elastin production. It works to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, even out texture and tone, and fade acne and surgical scars. It’s suitable for all complexions and has little to no downtime.

How it works.

During a microneedling treatment, tiny needles “stamp” into the skin’s surface to create microscopic, controlled injuries. These injuries stimulate the skin’s healing process, producing more collagen and elastin for a revitalizing effect.
Microneedling FAQs
  • What is the recovery for microneedling?

Following the microneedling treatment, the body begins to heal the micro-channels by creating even more collagen and elastin, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. The skin may appear slightly pink, similar to very mild sunburn, for a day or two after the treatment. Additionally, the skin may feel slightly dry and tight.

  • What results will I see from microneedling?

Microneedling promotes long-term skin rejuvenation. Results can last for several months, especially if combined with a good skincare regimen and sun protection. Regular maintenance treatments (e.g., every 6-12 months) are recommended to maintain and enhance results over time.

  • How many sessions will I need?

The number of microneedling treatments will depend on the skin condition you are trying to correct. A customized treatment plan to correct your skin concerns will be developed during your complimentary skincare evaluation. However, to treat stretch marks or acne scarring, four to six treatments are generally needed every four to six weeks. For skin rejuvenation maintenance treatments, one treatment every three months is recommended.

  • Is microneedling painful?

Most people describe the sensation during a microneedling treatment as a tolerable pinching or pricking sensation while the treatment is performed. To help minimize any discomfort, a topical numbing cream is applied 20-30 minutes prior to the treatment.

  • What can I expect after the treatment?

Post-treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, and mild tenderness similar to a sunburn, which typically subsides within 1-2 days. You may also notice some minor flaking or peeling as the skin heals.

  • Is there any downtime with microneedling?

Downtime is minimal. Most people can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and follow post-treatment care instructions to protect and support the healing skin.

  • Are there any side effects?

Microneedling is generally safe with minimal side effects. Common side effects include redness, swelling, and slight discomfort. Rare side effects may include infection or scarring, but these risks are minimized with proper care and hygiene.

Things to Keep In Mind for Treatment

  1. Avoid direct sun exposure for 2-4 weeks prior to your treatment.
  2. Apply a daily sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater and reapply as needed.
  3. Passive sun exposure is acceptable, but tanning either outside or in a tanning bed, is not. You cannot be treated if you have a sunburn, recently tanned, or sunless tanner on your skin.
  4. Avoid the following active ingredients in treatment areas 7 days prior to treatment: topical retinoids (e.g., Retin-A, tretinoin, adapalene), vitamin C, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid. If you are concerned about any of the products you are using, please ask your provider.
  5. Avoid filler for 1 month prior to treatment, as the effects of microneedling on filler are unknown.
Learn More about pre-care
  1. A physical sunscreen will be applied in sun-exposed treatment areas immediately following the procedure.
  2. A sunburn-like sensation, redness, swelling, and pin-point bleeding in the treated areas are common and will resolve in the days that follow. Cool compresses may be used until these symptoms resolve.
  3. Avoid heavy or petroleum-based products in treated areas.
  4. Keep the skin cool and avoid higher body temperature that might result from hot tubs, saunas, or intense exercise. Let your provider know if you experience irritation as you resume normal activities.
