What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication initially developed to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which helps reduce blood sugar levels by promoting insulin release in the body. Semaglutide also suppresses appetite and slows the rate at which the stomach empties, allowing patients to feel full longer. In addition to being a highly effective weight loss medication, Semaglutide has also been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Am I a candidate for Semaglutide injections for weight loss?

Most people who are in good health and interested in shedding excess weight after implementing lifestyle changes like diet and exercise are candidates for semaglutide injections. However, people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 would not be candidates.

  • Are there any side effects to semaglutide injections?

The most common side effects are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and headache. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are particularly common when first starting Semaglutide treatment and with the dose increases, but these symptoms generally improve over time in most patients. Hypoglycemia can occur and is more common in patients who are also taking other blood glucose-lowering medications.

  • Is bloodwork required to determine candidacy?

No, bloodwork is not required to determine the candidacy of Semaglutide injections.

  • How long does it take to see results from semaglutide injections?

Based on large studies of Semaglutide treatment for weight loss, most patients can expect to lose about 10-15% of their body weight. Some patients lose more and some less. Approximately 10% of patients are considered “non-responders” however it may take several months before this becomes apparent. The majority of patients will see notable results in 3-6 months.

  • How long will I need to take Semaglutide?

Each person will have individualized weight loss goals and respond differently to the injections. We customize the dose to each patient until weight loss goals are reached. At that point, patients will be transitioned to a maintenance dose and can expect to be on this medication long-term to maintain their weight loss.
